PSEUDOCYESIS.
False pregnancy, or Pseudocyesis, is known to occur in humans, cats, dogs, pigs, rats, and mice. For women who are humans, in the 1940's there was one occurence in the United States of America for every 249 pregnancies resulting in live births. In 2018, there are six occurences in the United States of America for every 21,994 pregnancies resulting in live births. It is documented, Pseudocyesis, as declining in trend as cases fall over time. Technological advances such as ultrasound help with this. Women as young as 6 and as old as 79 have been documented with Pseudocyesis, but the average human who undergoes features of False Pregnancy are women in their thirties who are married and who have been pregnant before. When cats undergo Pseudocyesis, the false pregnancy usually takes half the time of a real pregnancy that results in kittens. Is there evidence that all these cases in various species have undergone spontaneous abortion and were really all pregnant at one point in the Pseudocyesis? That is my own personal theory. Dogs seem to lactate more than cats in Pseudocyesis and human women undergoing Pseudocyesis tend to lactate also. This is markedly different from malintent of someone pretending to be pregnant on purpose while knowing they are not pregnant, which is clinically termed as psychosis of "simulated pregnancy." It is unfortunate that both Simulated Pregnancy and Pseudocyesis are requiring psycotherapy, when one is on purpose and the other is not. Dogs nest and are aggressively protective during Pseudocyesis, and sometimes when it is about the time that the "puppies" are to be "whelped" can seem fixated on toys, or blankets, or other objects which the "mother" dog babies and takes care of as if those were living puppies. Spaying makes Pseudocyesis disappear in cats and dogs; I would assume a hysterectomy in a woman would do the same.
