Migration Patterns of the Hopi Clan

This place is not at the geographical center of North America; rather, it should be understood as a mental and spiritual center. This is why Tuwanasavi is regarded as the center of the world. It is here that, according to the legends, the migrations of the individual clans started along the North-South axle and along the East-West axle. The treks, therefore, describe the shape of a large cross, ending with the arctic in the North, the Pacific coast in the West, the Atlantic coast in the East, and the Gulf of Mexico in the South. When the leading clans reached these end points, they turned right and only then started their way back. Consequently, the large cross became a large swastika, which turns to the left like a water wheel and, therefore, represents the Earth.
Since the leading clans held more knowledge and were the first to start the migrations, they laid claim to the land. Of all the clans, only seven reached the southern tip of South America: the Bear, Eagle, Sun, Kachina, Parrot, Flute, and Coyote Clans. Among the other leading clans were the Snake, Spider, Tobacco, Water, and Bow Clans.
The less important clans turned left at the end of their treks. They simply greeted the Sun in their prayers and supported the leading clans in their ceremonies, since they did not have any complete rituals themselves. By turning left, the path of these clans formed a swastika that turns clockwise---that is, with the Sun. In this fashion, the clans professed their loyalty to their creator, the Father Sun. Among these clans are: the Mole, Bluebird, Sparrow Hawk, Butterfly, Crow, Millet, Pumpkin, Shallow Well, Fog, Sun, Sand, and Corn Clans.
